Canistel. A fruit you won’t forget! Unfortunately…

Canistel – a fruit mistake or an exotic curiosity?

I always assume that it’s worth trying new things, especially if they are local and exotic. That’s why when I got my hands on canistel, or the so-called “egg fruit”, I couldn’t resist – because if it’s a fruit, it must be delicious… right?

Well – not this time.

First impression? Its taste (or rather lack thereof) resembled a raw potato. Hard, dry, and on top of that some sticky substance oozed from it, which didn’t encourage further experiments. But since I don’t like to give up after the first bite, I gave it another chance – this time in the cooked version. After all, the Internet claims that canistel can be “saved” by heat treatment.

And… no. After cooking, it tasted like cooked onion. Seriously. A fruit that tastes like a vegetable from a broth – that wasn’t my culinary moment of glory.

But hey – every culinary adventure teaches you something. And while canistel definitely won’t make it to my list of favorites, I’m glad I tried it. Because you never know – maybe next time I’ll discover something that conquers my taste buds!
