Níspero – the underrated fruit you need to try on Tenerife

While strolling through local markets on Tenerife in spring, you might come across small, golden fruits that look a bit like apricots or plums, but… something’s off. That’s níspero, also known as loquat – a fruit full of surprises in both taste and benefits.

What is níspero?

Níspero (loquat or Japanese medlar) originates from Asia but thrives in the Canary Islands’ mild climate. The tree has shiny green leaves and produces fruit from April to June – making it one of the first seasonal treats of spring.

Its flesh is soft and juicy, with a flavour somewhere between peach, apple, and mango. Sweet and slightly tart – a tropical twist for your taste buds!

Why is it worth trying?

Apart from being delicious, níspero is also packed with health benefits:

  • Vitamin A – great for skin and eyesight
  • Fiber – helps digestion
  • Potassium – supports heart health
  • Antioxidants – slow down aging processes

It’s even believed to have anti-inflammatory and blood sugar-regulating properties. Not bad for such a humble-looking fruit, right?

Where to buy it?

You’ll find fresh níspero at local farmers’ markets (mercado) across the island – for example, in Adeje, Tacoronte, or Puerto de la Cruz. You can also buy jams or juices made from níspero, which make tasty, unique souvenirs.

How to eat it?

  1. Wash the fruit.
  2. Peel the thin skin (slightly bitter).
  3. Cut in half and remove the seeds – they’re large and not edible.
  4. Enjoy the rest – fresh or in a fruit salad!

You can also turn it into jam, compote or chutney – perfect with cheese boards.

A local tip:

On Tenerife, locals often joke that níspero is the “grandma’s fruit” – many older residents have the trees in their backyard and love to share them. But the season is short, so if you’re here in spring – give it a try!

To sum up:
If you love discovering local flavors and trying fruits you won’t find in your usual supermarket, níspero is a must-try. Tasty, healthy, and oh-so-Tenerife.

Have you tried it before? Or is this the start of a juicy new love story?
